Yemaya Mother Goddess of the Ocean
Yemaya is the Yoruba goddess (orisha) of the ocean, fertility, and is considered the great mother. She is depicted as maternal and nurturing as well as a ferocious warrior wielding a machete when going to war for her children. Yemaya is said to have invented the practice of throwing cowrie shells as a form of divination.
